Comparison of the Companies on the BIST Sustainability Index with Other Listed Companies in the Context of Earnings Manipulation

The concept of sustainability has been gaining importance all over the world. Concerns consumers, investors, fund providers and governmental organizations about motivate companies to take action for a more sustainable Stock exchanges have also created related indices. starting point this study is assumption that in index are respectful environment, society economy therefore, they trustworthy when presenting their earnings. Earnings manipulation was detected by using Beneish Model (1999). M-scores BIST non-financial firms were calculated years 2017 (262 firms) 2018 (261 firms). results showed nearly half sample possibly manipulators both years. Additionally, 40 percent on manipulators. Although percentage manipulating lower compared firms, according statistical tests, there no significant difference between earnings behaviours those not index.
